米国時間3月8日、Apple（アップル）は米国の子ども向けポッドキャストのキュレーションのためにCommon Sense Mediaと提携したことを発表した。家族で楽しむエンターテインメントとして、音声によるものがこのところ関心を集めているためであり、このような関心は、一部にはパンデミックと子どもたちの娯楽のためのスクリーンタイムを短くしたいという親たちの願望によって促されたのかもしれない。

AppleはApple.co/showsforkidsという新しいウェブサイトで、Common Sense Mediaと協力して、ポッドキャストをテーマ別、年齢別にグループ分けした。ローンチ時点でコレクションにはTinkercast、American Public Media、Gen-Z Media、Pinna、Tumble、Highlights、WNYC Studios、Rebel Girls、Nickelodeonといったクリエイターが参加している。

年齢別グループに加えて、一般的な家族向け番組を集めた「Common Sense Media Picks」、ステリアスな物語やアクション満載のドラマを中心の「One More!」、子供たち自身が選んだ番組を紹介する「Kids Know Best」、物語を中心としたショー「Story Time」という4つのテーマ別コレクションも用意されている。

このサイトは毎月アップデートされて新番組や人気番組が入れ替わり、また、Women’s History MonthやBack to School（新学期）などのテーマの歴史や文化にちなんだ時事的なコレクションも紹介される。

番組の選択基準はCommon Sense Mediaがテレビ番組や映画、書籍、アプリ、ゲームなどにも適用している調査に基づいたものとなる。今回のローンチは、Appleが最近デビューした「Apple for Kids」に次ぐもので、Apple for Kidsは親がFamily Sharingオプションに従って家族のニーズに配慮し、デバイスを子ども向けにセッティングすることをサポートする。

子どもがApple製品を使う時間は長くても、子ども向けポッドキャストの市場はまだ小さい。Appleのポッドキャスト上位100の中に、子ども向けのものはない。しかし専門家によると、今後大人向けポッドキャストの成長にともなって子ども市場も成長する可能性があるという。また、最近のMorning Consultの報道によると、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックで、家での子どもたちのエンターテインメントに親が気を遣うようになり、オーディオコンテンツへの新しい関心が高まっているという。

その例として、NPRの「Wow in the World」は、パンデミック前に比べてダウンロード数が94％増加した。またNPR’s 2020 Spoken Word Audio Reportによると、現在、米国の大人の15％が、子ども向けの音声コンテンツを聴いている。つまり、親が子どもと一緒にポッドキャストを聴いているのだ。また、子ども向けポッドキャストの普及に努める非営利団体Kids Listenの調査では、ポッドキャストを聴く子どもたちの89％が8歳以下だとMorning Consultは報じている。

The Informationの2020年の報道では、Appleは2021年にSpotifyへ対抗するための新しい会員制ポッドキャストを検討しているという。この報道の数週間後にAppleはポッドキャストへの関心をさらに強めたようで、新たな連載編集記事Apple Podcasts Spotlightを立ち上げて興味深い番組制作者の紹介を開始した。

このように子ども番組に力を入れることは、おそらくAppleの今後の野心を表している。なぜならポッドキャストを聴いている親の64％が、有料の子ども向けポッドキャストの会員になるというからだ。

Apple announced this morning it’s teaming up with Common Sense Media to curate a selection of kid-friendly podcasts in the U.S. in light of what appears to be growing interest in spoken-word entertainment among families. That interest, in part, may have been prompted by the pandemic and parents’ desire to reduce kids’ screen time for entertainment.

Via a new website at Apple.co/showsforkids (which launches Apple Podcasts), Apple has collaborated with Common Sense Media to group podcasts by age group as well as by theme. At launch, the collection features creators like Tinkercast, American Public Media, Gen-Z Media, Pinna, Tumble, Highlights, WNYC Studios, Rebel Girls and Nickelodeon, among others.

In addition to groups by age, there are also four thematic collections available: Common Sense Media Picks, which are all-time family favorites; One More!, which features mysterious tales and action-packed dramas; Kids Know Best, which feature shows picked by kids themselves; and Story Time, which are story-driven shows.

The site will be updated monthly to feature new and popular shows and to introduce timely collections around historical and cultural moments, like Women’s History Month or Back to School ideas, Apple says.

The company also notes the selection of shows is curated using the same sort of research-backed approach that Common Sense Media applies to other entertainment, like TV shows, movies, books, apps and games.

The launch follows Apple’s recent debut of an “Apple for Kids” website that helps parents set up devices for kids and learn about Family Sharing options, highlighting an increased interest in catering to the needs of families.

But unlike with kids’ use of Apple devices, the current market for kids’ podcasts is small — none of Apple’s top 100 podcasts are directed toward kids, for example.

However, industry experts believe the kids market may grow alongside the overall adult podcast market. Plus, as Morning Consult recently reported, the COVID-19 pandemic has helped drive new interest in the audio format as parents struggled to keep kids entertained at home.

Case in point: one leading kids’ podcast, “Wow in the World” by NPR, saw a 94% increase in downloads in the 13 weeks post-COVID compared with pre-COVID, the report said.

In another recent analysis, NPR’s 2020 Spoken Word Audio Report found that 15% of U.S. adults were now listening to children’s spoken word audio — an indication that many parents were already co-listening with kids. In addition, research from Kids Listen, a nonprofit advocacy group for kids’ podcasts, found that 89% of kids who listen to podcasts are ages 8 or under, Morning Consult pointed out.

Apple, it’s worth noting, has been rumored to be considering a new podcast subscription service to challenge Spotify, The Information reported year earlier this year. In the weeks since that report, Apple has seemingly begun to pay more attention to the format, having launched a new editorial franchise, Apple Podcasts Spotlight, to highlight interesting creators.

Adding kids’ programing could play into Apple’s future ambitions, perhaps, as 64% of parents who listen to podcasts said they’re likely to purchase a paid subscription to podcasts for their kids.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Apple was as busy as it has ever been last fall, announcing four new iPhone models, the first Mac and MacBook computers powered by the M1 processor, and the AirPods Max. Therefore, it's no surprise that we haven't heard much from the company since, but if recent leaks are to be believed, Apple might be preparing to break its silence and reveal a few new products on Tuesday, March 23rd. Spring hardware events have been commonplace for Apple in recent years, but the coronavirus outbreak turned into a full-blown pandemic right around the time that the company would have held an event in 2020. As a result, we got a series of press releases on Apple's website instead of a rumored showcase. In the months that followed, Apple began to film its events ahead of time, and that might be what Cook and co. have in store for March. Early on Monday morning, DuanRui on Twitter shared a rumor that Apple would hold its spring event on the same day that OnePlus plans to announce its next flagship phone, which the company already confirmed will be on March 23rd. Moments later, Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser posted the following message on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jon_prosser/status/1368871892531154946 In a follow-up tweet, Prosser added that a reliable source claims new iPad Pro, AirPods, and Apple TV models are all "ready," as are the long-awaited AirTags Bluetooth trackers. That's not a guarantee that these products will be present at the spring event (providing there is actually an event), but it's likely that several will be. AirTags have been popping up in rumors for well over a year, but signs are pointing to the trackers finally making their debut in the coming days. As we noted last week, Apple added an "Items" tab to the Find My app in the third iOS 14.5 beta, and although it doesn't specifically mention AirTags, it does feature an image containing a number of items that you might want to attach to a Bluetooth tracker so as not to lose them. As for the iPad Pro, it was really only a matter of time before the company's premium tablet got an upgrade. The big question now is how far Apple will push the new generation. Will the new iPad Pro simply have a faster processor, or will Apple bring a mini-LED display to its iPad for the very first time before the end of the month. There's apparently a chance that we will see the redesigned, stem-less AirPods Pro 2 as well. But the biggest surprise of all would be a new Apple TV. We've known for quite some time that Apple was working on a set-top box with an "upgraded" remote, but there hadn't been any news about the refresh since Bloomberg's report last August. That said, with the Apple TV+ sitcom Ted Lasso coming off wins at the 2021 Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, it certainly wouldn't be a bad time to roll out new hardware.
