米AmazonのCEOジェフ・ベゾス氏が、水曜日の年次株主総会で7月5日に最高経営責任者を退任し、現AWS CEOのアンディ・ジャシー氏にその座を引き継ぐことを発表しました。

ベゾス氏は今後も会長としてAmazonの重要な方針決定などに関わっていくとしており「新製品や新たな取り組みにエネルギーと関心を注げるエグゼクティブチェアマンの役割に就くことをとても楽しみにしています」と述べました。

2月に退任の意向を明らかにした際、ジャシー氏にCEOを引き継ぐのは2021年第3四半期になるとされていました。ベゾス氏は退任日を7月5日にしたことについて「27年前、1994年のその日がAmazonが設立された日だから、自分にとって特別な日付だった」としました。

また置き土産となったMGM買収という大型案件に関しては「MGMには、人々に愛されている膨大かつ深い知財カタログがあります。MGMとアマゾン・スタジオの優秀な人材によって、その財産を21世紀にあわせて再構築し、さらに発展させていくることができる」と述べています。

一方、後継になるジャシー氏については、18年前の2003年にAmazonのクラウドコンピューティング部門Amazon Web Services(AWS)創設に携わり、今では、アマゾンで最も収益性の高い部門として、2021年の最初の四半期で135億ドル(約1.5兆円)の売上高を記録するまでに育て上げました。新型コロナ影響下での需要増も後押ししたものの、これはAmazonの四半期の総収益でも12%を占める額となっています。

ジャシー氏はまだAmazon CEOの着任前ですが、すでに就任後に向けた準備を着々と進めており、その最初の大きな動きとして、元上級幹部でこの2月にAmazonを去ったところだったジェフ・ブラックバーン氏を呼び戻し、新たに統合されたメディア・エンターテインメント部門を統括させることにしました。

ブラックバーン氏は2006年からベゾス直属のエリート集団「S-team」に加わっており、当時のAmazonでの役割は、サードパーティ市場、事業開発、広告など多岐にわたっていました。また最近ではプライム・ビデオ、Amazon Studios、IMDb、Amazon Musicといったメディアビジネスを担っていました。ブラックバーン氏の復帰は6月7日に予定されています。
