米国時間3月11日、欧州の大手石油・ガス企業であるShell（シェル）は、化石燃料からの脱却を目指して技術開発を行う企業を支援するために同社が運営する、Shell GameChanger Accelerator（シェル・ゲームチェンジャー・アクセラレーター、GCxN）への新たな参加企業群を発表した。
この先この3社は、製品化の支援を行ってくれるShellの技術リソースを、利用することができるようになる。
ShellのGCxNプログラムマネージャーのHaibin Xu（ハイビン・シュー）氏は「GCxNの第4期生たちは、炭素を大量に排出していた従来のプロセスを、電気化学技術で代替できることを証明してくれるでしょう。再生可能エネルギーのコストが下がり続ける中で、業界を超えた取り組みやパートナーシップによって、これらの技術適用を、コスト効率よく拡大し、実用上の影響を与えることが可能であることが証明されるでしょう」と語る。
Shellのアクセレレーターは、このプログラムに選ばれたスタートアップ企業に対して、最大25万ドル（約2700万円）の非希釈的な資金を提供する。プログラム参加者は、インキュベーター、アクセラレーター、大学などのネットワークパートナーからの推薦を受け、ShellとNREL（米エネルギー省国立再生可能エネルギー研究所）による審査を経て決定される。
声明によれば、過去3回のプログラムの卒業生たちは、5200万ドル（約56億7000万円）を調達し、グリーン経済に51種類の新しい仕事をもたらしたとのことだ。
また、このアクセラレーターに参加した新会社たちはどれも、炭素集約型で持続可能な手法への移行が難しい分野の中で、炭素排出量を削減する方法を生み出すことに注力している。
さて前置きはこれ位にして、今回Shellが支援するスタートアップ企業たちを紹介しよう。
NRELのGCxNプログラムマネージャーであるKatie Richardson（ケイティ・リチャードソン）は次のように語る。「私たちの現代生活のほとんどすべての側面が、特定の材料や燃料に依存していますが、それは多大な影響をもたらしています。例えば、米国の製造業は、今後10年以内に米国最大の温室効果ガス排出源になることが予想されています。今回選ばれたGCxNスタートアップ企業たちが再構築しているのは、基本的な商品やサービスの二酸化炭素排出量を削減するために必要な構成要素なのです」。

Yesterday, the European oil and gas major producer Shell announced the latest cohort selected to participate in its Shell GameChanger Accelerator (GCxN), focused on supporting companies developing tech for the transition away from fossil fuels.
The three companies will have access to technical resources through Shell that can serve to aid in their commercialization.
“GCxN’s fourth cohort will help prove that electrochemistry technologies can replace carbon-intensive legacy processes. As renewable energy costs continue to drop, cross-industry initiatives and partnerships will prove that it’s possible to cost-effectively scale these technology applications and achieve real-world impact,” said Haibin Xu, Shell’s GCxN program manager.
Shell’s acceleartor provides startups selected for the program with up to $250,000 in non-dilutive financing. Participants are nominated by network partners coming from incubators, accelerators, and universities and then are subjected to a screening process by Shell and NREL.
Graduates of the program have raised $52 million in the three prevoius batches and have added 51 new jobs to the green economy, according to a statement.
Each of the new companies in the cohort are focused on creating ways to reduce carbon emissions in sectors that are carbon intensive and hard to transition to more sustainable practices, according to a statement.

For example, the American manufacturing industry is on-track to become the nation’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions within the next ten years,” said Katie Richardson, GCxN program manager at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in a statement. “The selected GCxN startups are restructuring essential building blocks to reduce the carbon impact of essential goods and services.”
