ロボット掃除機「ルンバ」などを提供するアイロボットジャパンは2月17日、同社が提供するロボット掃除機の国内累計出荷台数が昨年末の時点で400万台を突破したと発表した。これは同社が提供するルンバと床拭きロボット「ブラーバ」を合計した数字だ。

アイロボット・コーポレーションは2月10日に2020年通期の決算発表を行ったばかり。同社のグローバル全体での売上高は14億3040万ドル（約1516億円）で、前年比の成長率は18%だった。2017年以降、4年連続で10％を超える成長を続けている。日本市場での売上高も順調で、前年比20％の成長率を記録した。

アイロボットジャパンはその好調の要因について「世界的にインターネット販売が好調だったのに加え、日本では政府からの特別給付金や巣ごもり需要など、コロナ禍における消費トレンドが販売を後押しした」としている。

同社は「ロボット掃除機 一家に一台」をスローガンに掲げ、2023年までに全国世帯普及率を10％にすることを中期の経営目標としている。2020年1月に総務省が発表した資料によれば、日本の世帯数は約5907万世帯だ。今回発表された400万台という数字は出荷台数であり販売台数ではないので少し注意が必要だが、仮に累計出荷台数イコール各世帯への普及台数と仮定すると、現在の普及率は6.7％となる。ちなみに、読者のみなさんのイメージを膨らませるために補足すると、400万という数字は神奈川県（438万世帯）や大阪府（434万世帯）の世帯数に近い数字だ。
