Appleは「M1」チップへの移行を急速に進めているようだ。M1は、同社が開発したシステムオンチップ（SoC）だ。Appleは米国時間4月20日、M1チップを搭載した「iMac」と「iPad Pro」を発表した。
M1が2020年に登場した後、Appleはどちらかといえば慎重なペースでM1チップを全製品にロールアウトしていくと考えられていた。しかしiPad ProでM1を採用することが発表された今、どこかの時点で「iPhone」にも搭載される可能性を考えておく価値はあるだろう。
今回の製品刷新を全体的に見た場合、自社独自のチップを用いて製品ラインアップを大きく改革するというAppleの次なる動きが浮き彫りになってくる。「Arm」アーキテクチャーをベースにしたM1チップが「MacBook」に搭載された際、このノートブックは絶賛され、その需要は急増した。
Appleは、M1チップがもたらす勢いをほかの製品でも活用しないのだろうか？
同社はiMacで、大型の冷却ファンやかさ高いロジックボードを必要としなくなり、M1プロセッサーが設計上のブレークスルーになり得ることを際立たせてみせた。実際、今回のiMacは厚みが11.5mmしかなく、家の中のさまざまな場所に設置できる。このiMacはアプライアンスとして、あるいはホームオフィスにおけるメインPCとして使用できる。
CCS InsightのアナリストであるLeo Gebbie氏は次のように述べている。
Appleは今後、こうしたアプローチを変更する可能性が高い。同社はM1の利点を生かし、新たなデザインを打ち出してくるかもしれない。現在M1を搭載するラインアップは以下となる。
Appleはおそらく、M1の利点を同社のポートフォリオ全体で生かすようになるだろう。というのも、M1はより優れたインテグレーションや、デザインの可能性をもたらすとともに、QualcommやNVIDIA、Intelといった企業への依存度を低減するためだ。12月26日締めの四半期におけるMacの売上高は86億7000万ドルだった。前年同期は71億6000万ドルだった。需要が増加した一因はM1を搭載するMacのオプションにあるだろう。
要するに、AppleはこれまでのM1への移行が円滑に進んだことを受け、このチップの展開を徐々に加速すると考えられる。またM1は、同社にとって利幅やデザイン、製品のパフォーマンスの向上をもたらすチップだといえる。
