Cisco Systemsの2021会計年度第3四半期決算を見ればそのことがよく分かる。同社の決算はIT需要の先行指標となっており、多くの場合には他のテクノジーサプライヤーの今後の状況を早い段階で見極めるための尺度ともなっている。またGartnerは、世界的な半導体不足が2021年を通して続き、通常のレベルに戻るのは2022年第2四半期以降になる見込みだとしている。
Ciscoの最高経営責任者（CEO）Chuck Robbins氏のコメントを念頭に置いておいてもらいたい。部品のインフレは現実であり、企業は価格の上昇に先立って購入を加速させる可能性がある。米労働統計局によると、4月の米消費者物価指数は前年同月比の上昇率が4.2％になったという。
Ciscoの第3四半期は堅調だったが、インフレ懸念は同社の見通しに影を落としている。同社は第4四半期の売上高の伸びを6～8％、非GAAPの粗利益率を64～65％と見込んでいる。また、第4四半期における非GAAPの1株あたり利益は81～83セントになるとの見通しを示している。一方、アナリストらは非GAAPの1株あたり利益を85セント、粗利益率を66％近くと予想していた。
Ciscoの幹部らによると、同社は部品メーカーと供給や価格を確約済みだが、2021年末まで品不足が問題になるという。Robbins氏も、ネットワーキングソフトウェアや職場復帰支援ソフトウェアの需要が高い中、サプライチェーンの問題によって価格が押し上げられる可能性があると認めている。同氏は以下のように述べている。
