NES（北米版ファミコン）『ゼルダの伝説』未開封初期生産バージョンが87万ドル（約9600万円）で落札されたばかりですが、その数日後にNINTENDO64用の北米版『スーパーマリオ64』に156万ドル（約１億7000万円）の高値が付いて世界記録を塗り替えました。
オークションを実施したHeritage Auctionsによると、落札されたのは1996年に発売された北米版『スーパーマリオ 64』とのこと。カートリッジや外箱の状態によりゲームソフトウェアの鑑定をするWataGamesの評価では「9.8 A++ Sealed」とされており、これまでで最も高い評価を受けたゲームのコピーと呼ばれています。

出品情報の説明いわく「このタイトルの文化的意義とビデオゲームの歴史における重要性は卓越しており、このコピーの状態は息を呑むほど素晴らしく、私たちは本当に途方に暮れています」とのことです。上述のNES版ゼルダではいかにレアな値打ちものか細々と理由が説明されていましたが、今回は具体的な記述はないものの、パッケージなどを含めて1億円を超える希少さが認められた模様です。
昔のゲームソフトウェアは、基本的に子供が扱うため外箱は大事にされない、買ったからには箱を開けて遊ぶためか、保存状態のいい未開封品は高値が付く傾向があります。
特に2021年に入ってからはレトロゲームオークションは大盛況となっており、今年4月に『スーパーマリオブラザーズ』の未開封初期生産版が66万ドル（約7300万円）を記録していましたが、それをゼルダが上回った矢先にマリオが王座を奪還したかっこうです。2020年11月に『スーパーマリオブラザーズ3』が15万6000ドルで落札されて過去最高額と騒がれたのが、遠い過去のように思われます。
近年では発売されてすぐ遊べるダウンロード版が主流になりつつありますが、そちらは当然ながらオークションに出すことは不可能です。後々の子孫のことを考えると、遊ぶ用のダウンロード版とは別に保存用のパッケージ版を買っておくのもいいかもいれません。
